We landed at Universal Lanes for a Madison Heights/Hazel Park Chamber event — and here’s our honest disclosure: neither of us is a bowler. Which, it turns out, was half the fun. There’s a particular joy in flinging gutter balls alongside a big group of people who are equally terrible at the game, and this remodeled, surprisingly handsome alley right on 12 Mile turned out to be a great place to do it.
The thing that genuinely stopped us: the prices. Four adult beverages for under twenty bucks? In this economy? We’d come back for the bar math alone. The food’s reasonable and solid too, there’s an arcade right by the entrance (we snapped photos but didn’t play), and there’s upstairs event space that makes it a real option for parties, work gatherings, and group outings. Whoever was running the floor that night — a manager, we think — was a delight, fielding our extremely basic bowling questions without a single visible eye-roll. That kind of patience earns a lot of goodwill.
One small heads-up: getting into the lot means a left turn across 12 Mile, which is a headache at rush hour. Any other time of day, you’ll glide right in.
