Pura Vida Caribbean Cuisine

Our Take

On the Woodward stretch just north of downtown, Pura Vida does something you almost never see under one roof: Jamaican and Costa Rican cooking side by side, and both done with real care. This family-run kitchen turns out the Caribbean greatest hits — jerk chicken that regulars call fall-off-the-bone tender, braised oxtail, curry, rice and beans that soak up the jerk sauce — alongside Costa Rican plates that give the menu its second passport. It’s an unassuming spot (the kind of place you drive past for years before someone finally drags you in), but the food and the warmth of the staff are what people write home about, and there’s a patio for when the weather cooperates. Lunch specials run friendly, service is quick, and the vibe is pure hospitality — which is, fittingly, what the name promises. We’ve got it on our list as one of Pontiac‘s genuine hidden gems, and proof that the city’s food map keeps getting more interesting the farther you look.
