Some of the best meals hide in the most unassuming strip malls, and Flavors of Jamaica is exhibit A. This Pontiac Caribbean kitchen — the work of Chef Reniel of Irie Occasions — turns out the real thing: jerk chicken with proper depth, braised oxtails, curried goat, whole bone-in snapper, and plantains worth ordering a second helping of. What makes it genuinely rare is how well it feeds everyone at the table: there’s a sizable vegan menu (jackfruit standing in for jerk and curry, cauliflower for brown stew chicken) and Halal proteins too, so the friend with dietary rules isn’t stuck picking at a side salad. It’s earned its acclaim quietly — named Restaurant of the Year by the Pontiac Chamber and a WDIV ‘Best of the Best’ pick within months of opening. There’s a Caribbean-inspired brunch on Sundays and live entertainment on weekends, which tips it from ‘great takeout’ toward ‘make a night of it.’ On our list as one of the most joyful, all-are-welcome tables in Pontiac — and proof the city’s food scene has real range.
