The Terebus brothers spent decades scaring the daylights out of Michigan — their four-story Erebus Haunted Attraction on Perry Street once held the Guinness record as the world’s largest walk-through haunted house — so when they opened a year-round escape-room complex a few blocks away, they already knew how to build a room you don’t want to leave (or, well, can’t). Erebus Escape trades jump scares for puzzles, with a handful of elaborately staged rooms: break out of a hyper-detailed prison in Lockdown, work a murder in Body of Evidence, outwit an Ice Queen, chase down ancient secrets. The staging is the whole draw — the same decorators and effects people behind the haunt build these sets, so they feel less like a themed conference room and more like a movie you’ve walked into. It’s an easy, all-weather win for a group: birthday crews, date-night duos who like a little pressure, coworkers pretending it’s team-building. Free parking, downtown-adjacent, open most of the year. On our list as one of the more genuinely fun ways to spend an hour in Pontiac.
