If Rochester’s charm is its walkable historic Main Street, Rochester Hills‘ answer is The Village — Metro Detroit’s first open-air “lifestyle center,” opened in 2002 on the site of an old enclosed mall and designed to feel like a bustling little downtown, complete with tree-lined boulevards, a fountain, a clock tower, and firepits. The tenant list leans genuinely useful and browsable, heavy on the women-first lifestyle names: lululemon, Sephora, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Barnes & Noble, Aveda, a Whole Foods and Von Maur anchoring the ends, and the Woodhouse Day Spa tucked in for when shopping tips over into self-care. Add a deep bench of restaurants and a summer calendar of free events, and it’s less errand and more outing. It’s a polished shopping center, not a hidden gem — but it’s the best of its kind up here, and a genuinely pleasant way to spend an afternoon. On our list.
