On Our Radar

The Stevie Wonder Mural

Our Take

On the back wall of the Music Hall downtown, a towering, luminous portrait of Stevie Wonder gazes out over Brush Street — painted in 2019 by London artist Richard Wilson to coincide with Motown’s 60th anniversary. Wilson, who called Stevie “the greatest living singer, songwriter, and musician” and predicted he’d one day be remembered like Beethoven or Bach, rendered him in rich, glowing color worthy of the Motown legend.

It’s become a genuine downtown tourist magnet and an easy, joyful photo stop — and a perfect companion to the Motown trail, since this is the same Stevie whose childhood home on Greenlawn you can visit across town. A hometown hero, several stories tall.
