Meadow Brook Theatre

Our Take

The Meadow Brook estate pulls off a hat trick most towns would envy just one piece of: a Gilded-Age mansion, a summer amphitheatre, and this — Meadow Brook Theatre, Michigan’s largest producing professional theatre. Founded in 1966 on the Oakland University campus, it’s a genuine professional company staging a full season of six productions a year, from comedies and dramas to musicals, plus an annual A Christmas Carol that’s become a real multi-generational tradition and a Saturday children’s series for the youngest theatergoers. The house is the selling point: intimate enough that there’s no bad seat, with sightlines and acoustics that make even the budget tickets feel like a splurge. Parking is free and right across the way, which after a night fighting for a spot downtown feels almost radical. It’s the kind of cultural anchor that quietly makes Rochester Hills more than a suburb — a proper night out without the drive into the city. On our list, and best enjoyed as one stop on a whole estate’s worth of things to do.
