Edsel & Eleanor Ford’s Grave

If you’ve walked the grounds of the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House out on Lake St. Clair, this is where that story quietly ends. Edsel — Henry Ford’s only son and the company’s president for nearly a quarter century — was the family’s aesthete, the one who pushed for beauty and design (the original Lincoln Continental was essentially his taste made metal) and who bankrolled Diego Rivera’s era-defining Detroit Industry murals at the DIA. Worn down at just 49, he died in 1943; his wife Eleanor, a niece of retailer J.L. Hudson and a fierce protector of the arts, joined him here in 1976.

Their marker is pure Edsel: a sleek black granite sarcophagus, understated among the showier auto-baron tombs that ring Woodlawn‘s reflecting pond. Restraint as a final statement. On our list.
