Rock and Brews Royal Oak

Our Take

We’ll be honest about what got us in the door: we’d heard members of KISS are behind Rock & Brews, and that was reason enough to add it to the list. It’s a chain, but a genuinely unique one — a rock-and-roll temple of a place spread across three floors in downtown Royal Oak, with stained-glass rock icons, guitars and amps everywhere, a concert hall upstairs, and a rooftop that looks like a great time come summer.

We dropped in early on a Thursday and posted up at the bar for happy hour. There is so much to look at here that we honestly wish we’d lingered longer — we kept it to a small app and a couple of rounds before pulling ourselves away to keep exploring Royal Oak. Our bartenders made it: funny, sharp, and (as bartenders so often are) walking encyclopedias of local recommendations, which we happily mined. We could hear a band sound-checking upstairs but didn’t make it up to catch the show — next time.

One honest, temporary heads-up from our visit: there was street construction out front that made it a little confusing to walk up to. Nothing the staff can control, and likely resolved by the time you go — just allow a minute to find the door.

Quick-hit details

  • Don’t miss: Happy hour at the bar; doing a lap of all three floors (the memorabilia is the whole experience); the rooftop in warm weather; catching live music in the upstairs concert hall
  • Good to know: KISS-affiliated, rock-themed chain; three floors plus a rooftop; full bar, draft beer, big menu; live-music venue upstairs (check the calendar); fun, attentive bar staff
  • Watch out for: Drinks run a bit pricey by some accounts; food and service can be hit-or-miss (it’s big and busy); concert-hall seating can fill fast, so arrive early for shows; (at our visit) nearby construction made the walk-up confusing — likely temporary
