Mill Race Historical Village

Mill Race Historical Village is an 11-acre living museum tucked just off downtown Northville, built in 1972 by the Northville Historical Society on land donated by the Ford Motor Company, near the original site of the town’s grist mill. Eight historic buildings — including a Greek Revival church built in 1845, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, an interurban train station, and the Cady Inn, one of Northville’s oldest structures and believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad — were relocated here to preserve architecture that predates 1900, all set along the Rouge River with award-winning gardens and a gazebo.

The grounds are free and open year-round (barring private events), and the buildings themselves open to the public on Sundays from mid-June through mid-October, with docents on hand to walk through each structure’s history. It’s also become a genuine local wedding venue — couples can get married in the 1845 church or the gazebo, which explains why a fair number of Northville engagement shoots happen to be taken here too.
