A New Deal stadium with a wild guest list, reborn as the rowdiest ticket in Detroit soccer. Keyworth Stadium opened in Hamtramck in 1936 as the first Works Progress Administration project in Michigan — and President Franklin Roosevelt himself turned up for the dedication. (Then-Senator John F. Kennedy gave a campaign speech here in 1960, calling Hamtramck the “strongest Democratic city in the United States.”)
For decades it was a high-school field; then in 2016, fan-owned Detroit City FC — “Le Rouge” — raised more than $740,000 from supporters in just 109 days to renovate it and move in. The result is one of the best live-sports atmospheres in the state: a wall of smoke, drums, and song from the Northern Guard supporters. Catch a match while you can — DCFC is building a new home in Corktown for 2027, so Keyworth’s run as the club’s house is winding down. The historic Negro Leagues park, Hamtramck Stadium, is just a short hop away.
