Great Dane Pub Royal Oak

Our Take

Here’s a fun one: the Great Dane almost wasn’t a British pub at all. Owners Mike and Lisa Dimmer had the sign up for a Voodoo Brewing franchise when the state liquor commission threw a wrench in it — so they pivoted and built their own thing instead. They named it after their only son, Dane (their five daughters are all named after flowers, which is why the place mixes big-dog, green-plaid energy with softer floral touches). It’s the kind of family backstory you can actually feel in the room.

We came in casual and left charmed. It’s an easy, comfortable spot — brick walls, warm wood, that hunter-green plaid, cozy booths, a proper full bar with two dozen taps leaning Michigan-craft. The food is British-pub-meets-Royal-Oak-crowd-pleaser: fish and chips, short rib, bangers and mash, burgers, salads, even pizza. Nothing trying too hard, portions are generous, prices are fair for downtown Royal Oak. The drinks were solid and the service was warm. It’s not a destination cocktail temple or a fussy dinner — it’s the neighborhood pub Royal Oak was missing, and that’s exactly the point.

The owners said they wanted to land “somewhere between the nightlife bars and the formal dining spots,” and they nailed that brief. It’s where you go when you want good comfort food, a decent pint, and a room that’s happy to have your whole crew — toddler included.
