El Guanaco

Salvadoran food is weirdly hard to find in metro Detroit, which is exactly why El Guanaco is worth knowing about. The Nunez family opened this Auburn Hills spot on Opdyke in 2022 (their original Troy location dates to 2013), and it’s the real thing: pupusas — thick, hand-pressed masa rounds stuffed with cheese, beans, spinach, or chorizo and griddled until they blister — served with a tangy pickled-cabbage curtido that regulars would happily take home by the bucket. Beyond the pupusas there’s a genuinely long menu spanning Salvadoran and Mexican: banana-leaf tamales, empanadas, chimichangas, tacos done Mexican-style or American, plus a small grocery nook up front.

The room is small and homey — tight booths, quiet Latin music, clean and warm — and the prices are gentle, with lunch specials around ten bucks. Fans routinely call these the best pupusas in Michigan, and they’re not wrong to make the claim.
