Detroit techno grew up in basements and warehouses, and Tangent Gallery — with its Hastings Street Ballroom — is where that all-night warehouse spirit still lives. An art space and event venue in Milwaukee Junction, it’s best known to techno heads as the home of the legendary “Tresor 313” parties on Movement weekend: twelve-hour marathons that run 10pm to 10am and pull heavyweights from both Detroit and Berlin.
That pairing is the whole point. Berlin’s Tresor club and label built itself partly on Detroit techno — releasing Underground Resistance and Jeff Mills — and “313” (Detroit’s area code) meeting “Tresor” nods to one of dance music’s great transatlantic love affairs. Few rooms in the city capture the marathon, no-daylight, deeply Detroit side of the music better.
