Every town deserves an Irish pub like John Cowley & Sons: older, clean, quaint and entirely comfortable in its own skin. It doesn’t chase trends, and it doesn’t need to. It’s a family-run Grand River fixture that has been pouring for decades and still feels like a neighborhood living room.
The food goes beyond the obvious. Yes, the Irish classics are there, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips and the rest, but the seafood options are where it quietly impresses, and the prices are reasonable across the board. Service was friendly and hospitable. On a Saturday night there’s a bit of lag between asks and answers, so settle in rather than watching the clock. That’s the right pace for a pub anyway.
The pub hosts live music on Friday and Saturday nights and has a patio for warmer evenings. One small detail we liked: the restaurant side is called the Coolhenry Room, named for the Cowley family’s ancestral home. It’s the kind of place that makes a solid anchor for a night in Farmington, and if you’d like to start or finish with something stirred instead of poured, Lone Light Spirits is just down the road.
