Detroit Eastern Market

Our Take

If we could send you to one market in all of metro Detroit, this is it. Eastern Market isn’t just a farmers market — it’s a 43-acre National Register historic district, the largest of its kind in the country, feeding Detroiters since the 1800s. The heart of it is a row of open-air sheds (start in Shed 2 — there’s famously no Shed 1) packed with Michigan produce, meat, cheese, flowers, baked goods, and specialty makers, where 40,000-plus people turn out on a busy Saturday. The Saturday market runs year-round; in summer, scaled-down Tuesday and artisan-focused Sunday markets join in. Beyond the sheds, the district is stacked with murals, galleries, distilleries, breweries, and legendary eats (Supino Pizzeria, Russell Street Deli, Detroit City Distillery). Time your visit to Flower Day in May for the city’s most joyful explosion of blooms. Loud, sprawling, historic, and gloriously Detroit — non-negotiable.
