We ducked into Mesa after an afternoon exploring Royal Oak had tipped us firmly into hangry territory — and it turned out to be exactly the right rescue. Right on Main Street in the heart of downtown, it’s a vibrant, energetic room full of bright artwork and quirky decor, the kind of place that feels like a party the second you walk in.
The food more than held up: as two people who, it turns out, eat a lot of Mexican food, we can say Mesa stands tall in the metro lineup. It’s also where I had my very first Wet Burrito — smothered, saucy, and apparently a Michigan thing I’d somehow never encountered in Chicago. (Consider me converted.) The tequila and cocktail list is deep, the chips and salsa earn their keep, and there’s a real fun-night energy to the whole thing.
The bonus that won us over: our server handed us a giant list of restaurant recommendations across the area that we’re still working through — exactly the kind of generosity that makes a good meal memorable. Fair notes: it skews younger and lively (very on-brand for Royal Oak), it can get crowded with a wait, and it’s a touch pricey. Worth it for the vibe and the tacos.
