We’ll be honest: we did not come to climb. We came for a Chamber of Commerce event, kept our feet firmly on the ground all evening, and still left thoroughly impressed — which might be the highest compliment a climbing gym can earn from two people with no plans to scale a wall anytime soon. Planet Rock’s Madison Heights flagship is a genuine spectacle: 20,000 square feet, five stories of colorful walls and springy floors, and a Thursday-night crowd so thick you’d have sworn it was a weekend.

The real draw was owner Nick Cocciolone, who spoke on a panel and turned out to be a terrific story. He built the first Planet Rock in a junk-filled Pontiac warehouse back in 1994 — no heat, no water, famously financed on a stack of credit-card offers he’d normally have tossed. Three decades on, it’s one of Michigan’s oldest and largest climbing operations, with this Madison Heights gym plus locations in Ann Arbor and a brand-new Grand Rapids. It earns its Been There not because we’re taking up the sport, but because the space is legitimately cool and the founder’s grit is exactly the kind of local story we love pointing you toward.
