Pontiac Transportation Museum

Everyone knows Detroit built cars. Fewer people know how much of that story actually runs through Pontiac — which is exactly the gap the Pontiac Transportation Museum exists to fill. Set in a historic former school building just off the downtown core, it’s one of the city’s newest cultural additions and a genuine labor of love, telling more than 150 years of ‘Made in Pontiac’ history across an impressive range: horse-drawn carriages, early trucks, Pontiac-brand muscle, even the wonderfully odd 1970s GMC Motorhome. The collection is restored with obvious care, and the guides tend to be the kind of passionate volunteers who’ll tell you things no placard ever would. It’s compact, it’s indoors, and it’s the rare local museum that rewards both the die-hard gearhead and the person who just wants an interesting, low-key way to spend a gray afternoon. There’s even a photogenic 35-foot mural on the building’s west wall practically built for a selfie with your own car. On our list as the thoughtful, hometown counterweight to M1’s roar — proof that Pontiac’s car story is worth telling slowly, too.
