Shield’s of Southfield

Detroit-style pizza is having a national moment, but Southfield has been quietly eating the real thing at Shield’s since 1977. This is a proper Detroit institution — square, thick, sheet-pan pizza with the caramelized-cheese edges and the sauce ladled on top, the whole crispy-chewy business done by people who’ve been at it for decades (the family’s original Shield’s dates to 1930s Detroit). The Telegraph Road location is the classic suburban set-up: a big, dependable room with a full bar, a wall of TVs for the game, and a menu that runs well past pizza into pastas, salads, wings, and subs. It isn’t precious or trend-chasing; it’s the reliable, order-a-square-and-a-pitcher spot that every generation of a Southfield family seems to end up at. Regulars will happily argue it out-slices the more famous names. Come hungry, come with a group, and get the square — that’s the whole point. On our list as Southfield’s Detroit-pizza standard-bearer.
