Barb’s Pasties & Pizza

If you didn’t grow up in Michigan, a pasty needs explaining; if you did — especially anywhere near the U.P. — Barb’s needs no introduction. Family-owned since 1984, this unassuming little take-out shop just off Main Street has been turning out Copper Country pasties for generations: flaky hand-pies packed with beef (with the requisite rutabaga), chicken, or vegetables, made fresh daily and built to survive being eaten one-handed. Yooper transplants drive absurd distances for them and swear they’re the closest thing to their grandmother’s — which, in the pasty world, is the highest possible praise.

There’s pizza and subs too, plus a rotating dessert or two, but the pasty is the point. It’s easy on the wallet, take-out-first, and completely without pretense. If you’re introducing an out-of-towner to Michigan food culture, this is a genuinely meaningful stop — order a warm one for now and a few frozen for later. We’ve got it on our list as one of Clawson‘s most quietly beloved institutions and a perfect out-of-town-guest initiation.
