Lafayette Coney Island

Our Take

Right next door to its more famous sibling sits Lafayette Coney Island, the half of Detroit’s great coney rivalry that isn’t run by the Keros family anymore — William Keros started it after a falling-out with his brother Gust (who kept American Coney Island going), and it’s been in the hands of former employees since 1991. The recipe, though, has reportedly stayed the same: a natural-casing Dearborn Sausage dog, steamed bun, all-beef chili, raw onion, mustard — no ketchup, ever.

Detroiters take real sides in this rivalry, and Lafayette has its own loyal following who’ll insist their chili runs richer and meatier than what’s next door. We haven’t made it in ourselves yet, but it’s high on our list the next time we’re downtown.
