First Congregational Church of Detroit

First Congregational Church of Detroit occupies a striking Romanesque and Byzantine sandstone building at Woodward and Forest, but its most significant story lives in the basement of the Albert Kahn-designed Angel’s Wing addition next door: the Underground Railroad Living Museum, one of the most immersive Underground Railroad experiences anywhere in the country. The church’s earlier buildings, closer to the river, served as one of the last stations before freedom seekers crossed into Canada between 1840 and 1863.

The 90-minute “Flight to Freedom” tour puts small groups through a first-person reenactment, starting with wristbands at a re-created “Door of No Return” and moving through hiding from bounty hunters, crossing the Ohio River, and sheltering in a safe house before finally reaching the church itself and, beyond it, Canada. It’s run by trained conductors in character, Tuesday through Saturday by reservation, and it’s become a fixture for school groups and history-minded visitors alike.
