Taj Al-Yemen & Family Donut is maybe the most Hamtramck business you’ll find anywhere in the city — an old-school American doughnut and coffee shop that merged with a Yemeni restaurant roughly a year ago, reflecting the neighborhood’s shift as its Bangladeshi and Yemeni populations have grown. The menu spans classic American doughnuts and subs, Yemeni dishes like gallaba (charred beef cubes in a fragrant sauce) and chicken mandi (turmeric-bright rice with a quarter bird), Bosnian burek, and options tailored to the area’s large Bangladeshi community — plus what Metro Times called some of the best fried chicken in Metro Detroit.

Manager Nivil Al-Haiga has said the combination is intentional: they want something for everyone who walks through the door, which in Hamtramck could mean literally anyone. It’s open early and late, which makes it as useful for a 7am coffee-and-doughnut run as for a late-night lamb fahsa (a slow-cooked stew finished with fenugreek).
