April and Michelle Anderson’s bakery is a bright, joyful corner of the Avenue — and a nationally recognized one, celebrated as a Black-owned and LGBTQ-owned business with a mission as warm as the ovens. The cases run to organic, from-scratch cakes (the caramel cake and red velvet have devoted followings), cupcakes, vegan options, banana pudding, and biscuit sandwiches.
Beyond the sugar, the Andersons have built the kind of community hub that hosts cash mobs and First Fridays and treats employees and neighbors like family. They’ve grown so much they’ve added a second outpost in the Columbia Street alley downtown, steps from Detroit vs. Everybody — but Livernois is home base.
