The Village Players

The Village Players is downtown Birmingham‘s community theater — and not just any: founded in 1923, it’s the third-oldest community theater in Michigan and among the fifty oldest in the country, still staging a full season of roughly five productions a year (a couple of musicals, a few plays) in its longtime Woodward Avenue playhouse. It’s volunteer-driven, genuinely local, and has the kind of century-deep roots most “historic” venues can only claim.

Tickets are affordable, the productions are earnest and often surprisingly polished, and there’s a real charm to seeing live theater in a room this steeped in it. We have it on our list as a lovely, low-key date-night or family-friendly alternative to dinner-and-a-movie — supporting something that’s been part of Birmingham for over a hundred years.
