Most stops on this trail are a century old; this one’s the new chapter. Shinola launched in 2011 betting that “Built in Detroit” still meant something — assembling watches (and later building bikes, leather goods, and audio) in a city much of the country had written off. The bet worked: the brand became a shorthand for Detroit’s comeback, and while not everything is made start-to-finish in the city, its watch assembly and its whole identity are rooted here.
The flagship on Canfield, in the heart of Midtown’s shopping row, is the place to see it — gleaming timepieces, Detroit-built bikes, the whole aesthetic. It shares the block with Jack White’s Third Man Records and sits steps from Carhartt, making this little stretch of Canfield a tidy showcase of Detroit makers old and new. Proof the “Made in Detroit” story is still being written.
