The RoboCop Statue

Only in Detroit: a 10-foot, 3,500-pound bronze RoboCop standing guard on Russell Street, the end of a 14-year saga that began with a 2011 tweet — Philadelphia has Rocky; Detroit should have RoboCop. It was cast at Venus Bronze Works, the same foundry that maintains the Spirit of Detroit and the Joe Louis Fist, and modeled on the armor Peter Weller actually wore in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 satire. Funded by a $67,000 Kickstarter from 2,700-odd donors worldwide, then pushed over the line by a six-figure assist from Amazon, which now owns the rights through MGM. Installed December 2025.

Here’s the joke sitting underneath it. Verhoeven’s Detroit was almost entirely Dallas — nine-plus weeks of principal photography there, with the steel mill showdown shot at a since-demolished mill outside Pittsburgh. The real Detroit turns up in the film as a few seconds of nighttime aerial stock footage. The city supplied the dystopia, Dallas collected the location fees, and Detroit got the statue. Call it even.

We walked over after a Saturday morning at the Eastern Market sheds and found a line — everyone politely waiting their turn for a photo. A full wedding party was working through their shots when we arrived, dressed to the nines and visibly melting in the heat. Worth the walk? Absolutely. It’s a genuine one-of-one, and it sits far enough off the sheds that you could spend an entire market day without ever knowing it’s there.
