Only in Detroit. After a 14-year saga that began with a 2011 viral tweet — “Philadelphia has Rocky; Detroit should have RoboCop” — the city finally has its 10-foot, 3,500-pound bronze RoboCop, installed in Eastern Market in December 2025. This is no cheap novelty: it was cast at Venus Bronze Works, the same foundry that maintains the Spirit of Detroit and the Joe Louis Fist, and modeled on the actual armor Peter Weller wore in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi satire, which imagined Detroit as a dystopia run by a greedy mega-corporation.
Funded by a $67,000 Kickstarter from 2,700+ donors worldwide and finally pushed over the line with a six-figure assist from Amazon (which now owns the rights via MGM), it stands guard outside the FREE AGE film studio. There’s a QR code on the base for the full story. Equal parts cool, nostalgic, and knowingly absurd — which is to say, perfectly Detroit.
