Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve

Don’t let the name raise your hopes — no dinosaurs — but Dinosaur Hill is one of the more charming pockets of green in Rochester: 16 wooded acres tucked improbably into a residential neighborhood, with trails that wind up and down glacial hills and across a creek, linking up with the Paint Creek Trail just beyond. It’s run as a nonprofit nature preserve and education center, so alongside the free, dawn-to-dusk trails there’s a small nature center and a busy calendar of hands-on programs — kids’ classes, guided hikes, seasonal events — that have made it a rite of passage for generations of local families. It’s small and unpolished in the best way; you come for a short, restorative loop and the reminder that nature sits closer than the subdivisions suggest.
