Paint Creek Center for the Arts

Paint Creek Center for the Arts is the creative heart of downtown Rochester — a nonprofit art center that’s been at it since 1982, running rotating gallery exhibitions of regional artists, a full slate of studio classes (drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, kids’ camps), and the thing it’s genuinely famous for: the Art & Apples Festival. Founded in 1965 and held the weekend after Labor Day in Rochester Municipal Park, it’s one of the highest-rated fine-art fairs in the country, drawing hundreds of juried artists and six-figure crowds to browse, buy, and eat their weight in caramel apples. But the gallery itself is a lovely, low-key, free stop any time of year — pop in, see what’s hanging, maybe sign up for a Saturday ceramics class. On our list as proof that Rochester‘s cultural life runs deeper than its Main Street shopfronts.
