Paint Creek Trail

Paint Creek Trail is the 8.9-mile spine that ties this whole area together — Michigan’s first rail-to-trail, opened in 1983 on an old railroad bed and surfaced in crushed limestone (chosen over asphalt to keep it feeling like the woods, not a sidewalk). It runs from downtown Rochester, where it begins as the Rochester River Walk in Municipal Park, north through Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, and on to Lake Orion, shadowing Paint Creek — a genuine cold-water trout stream — the whole way. It’s flat, shaded, and easy in tennis shoes, dotted with old railroad mile-markers that still count down to Detroit, and busy in the best way on a nice weekend with walkers, joggers, cyclists, and the occasional horse. Free, leashed-dog-friendly, and open year-round. On our list as the best low-effort way to spend an hour outside up here.
