Kruse & Muer on Main

Every good downtown has a white-tablecloth-adjacent classic that regulars have stayed loyal to for decades, and on downtown Rochester‘s Main Street that’s Kruse & Muer. The name goes back to 1988, when Bill Kruse teamed up with the late Detroit restaurateur Chuck Muer; it’s since grown into a small family group, but the Main Street original is the one with the ten-foot wooden carving at the door and the oven-baked bread people genuinely plan their evening around. The menu is broad and seafood-leaning — pan roasts, crab cakes, blackened everything, a Martha’s Vineyard salad — the sort of thing that works for a date, an anniversary, or the visiting in-laws who want “somewhere nice.” It isn’t chasing the cutting edge and doesn’t need to; it’s the comfortable, dependable special-occasion room a town keeps coming back to.
