Birmingham Museum

The Birmingham Museum is a quietly rewarding stop a short walk from downtown — two historic houses on nearly four acres beside the Rouge River trail. The star is the 1822 John West Hunter House, the oldest house in Oakland County and one of the oldest intact dwellings in Michigan, on the National Register and furnished to its pioneer-through-1920s life; an exposure window even lets you peek at how it was built. The 1926 Allen House, built for Birmingham’s first mayor, holds rotating exhibits on the city’s history.

The grounds are a genuine public park with a spring-fed pond, open even when the houses aren’t. We have it on our list as the best way to understand how a swampy trail crossing became the metro’s most polished downtown — pair it with a Sunday at the farmers market for an easy, low-key Birmingham morning.
