Evening Bar

Some bars announce themselves; Evening Bar hides. It’s tucked into the Shinola Hotel’s ground floor with its entrance through Parker’s Alley — the kind of door you’d walk past if you didn’t know, which is of course the point. Inside, the Gachot Studios-designed room goes full nightcap: low-slung sofas, lounge seating arranged around a fireplace, mercury glass throwing warm light, and a back-lit cocktail bar under a custom mirror inspired by old Detroit’s murals. The drinks lean on time-honored technique — proper classics alongside highballs and session cocktails, including a very Michigan number called the State Fair, built on tart-cherry bourbon and creamy lemonade — plus elevated bar bites and, notably, a real list of non-alcoholic spirits for anyone keeping the evening dry.

We admired the doorway on our alley stroll but haven’t settled into those sofas yet; it’s on our list for the end of a downtown night out — the quiet, candlelit epilogue after dinner at San Morello or a show. Reservations open 28 days out and the room is small, so plan like it matters.
