San Morello

San Morello is the dressed-up anchor of the Shinola Hotel — James Beard winner Andrew Carmellini’s take on Southern Italy, wrapped in 180 degrees of windows that open to Woodward when the weather allows. We finally got inside on a Sunday and took seats at the bar. One table over, a family was celebrating a college graduation; a few feet the other way, guests were parked with suitcases still in tow. Celebrations, hotel arrivals, and people just having an afternoon downtown, all in one room.

What stuck with us was the bartending. The team was visibly busy and working short, and we still never felt forgotten or like an inconvenience — the welcome stayed warm and the attention stayed steady. We’ve both spent years in hospitality management, so we tend to watch how a crew handles pressure rather than how it performs on a quiet shift. This crew handled it, and that tells us more than a flawless slow Tuesday would.

Full disclosure: we drank, we didn’t eat. The wood-fired pastas and pizzas everyone raves about remain untested by us, so there’s no dinner verdict here yet — just a bar that earned a return trip. Go for a civilized drink before or after something else on the block, whether that’s the beer hall or the hidden Evening Bar. We’ll be back for the food.
