The Trap Yoga & Massage Studio started as Jamel Randall’s personal practice space and grew into one of Detroit’s most distinct wellness brands — the kind of place where a yoga class might run over trap beats instead of ambient pan flute, and nobody’s precious about it. Randall developed BlacThai massage in-house, a hybrid technique that blends western gliding strokes with Thai-style assisted stretching, and it’s become the studio’s signature offering alongside more traditional Swedish and deep-tissue work.
Beyond the studio walls, Randall runs a free weekly outdoor yoga series at Spirit Plaza downtown — locals know it as “Yinsday” — that’s pulled crowds of a hundred-plus on a Wednesday evening, plus a kids’ wellness offshoot called LiL Trap Yogis. It’s a Black-owned business built on the idea that wellness spaces don’t have to feel clinical or exclusive to be legitimate.
On our list for anyone who’s been curious about yoga but put off by the usual studio vibe, or who wants a massage that does more than just knead — the BlacThai flow sessions in particular are a genuinely different experience from a standard table massage.
