Taystee’s Burgers

Only in metro Detroit does the best burger in town come out of a gas station — and it’s a compliment. Taystee’s started in 2014 inside a Dearborn filling station, built a cult following on fresh, made-to-order halal burgers, and has since grown into a small Michigan chain; the Warren outpost on Mound Road keeps the formula intact. The burgers are the draw: five-ounce halal patties, brioche or pretzel buns, and gleefully over-the-top specialty builds (grilled-cheese-sandwich buns, mac-and-cheese-bite toppings, the loaded “Notch-Yo-Burger”), plus wings, loaded fries, hot dogs, and even a vegan patty. Everything’s halal and cooked to order, the vibe is fast and colorful with the games on, and it’s open till 1 a.m. for the late crowd. It’s counter service in an unglamorous spot — and genuinely one of the more fun burgers you’ll eat. On our list as Warren’s proof that a gas-station burger can be a destination.
