Street Corner Music

Every metro has its serious record store — the one collectors drive past three closer shops to reach — and in Oak Park that’s Street Corner Music. It’s been dealing vinyl since 1992, tucked unassumingly into the Lincoln Center strip on Greenfield, and it’s beloved precisely because it never tried to be anything trendier than a great record store. The stock leans hard into Detroit’s own catalog — soul, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, reissues — with roughly two-thirds vinyl to one-third CDs, a genuinely rewarding dollar bin, and the kind of rare finds (Bowie promos, Prince picture discs) that make crate-diggers lose an afternoon. The co-owners have been in the record business since the early ’80s, and it shows in the staff’s easy, unshowy expertise.

It’s an ideal rainy-Saturday detour, and the location does you a favor: the excellent indie bookstore Book Beat is literally next door, and Bread Basket Deli is a few steps further, so one stop becomes three.
