Philippé Wynne’s Grave

Our Take

If you’ve ever gotten lost in the ad-libs at the end of “I’ll Be Around” or “The Rubberband Man,” that’s Philippé Wynne — the soaring, improvisational lead voice of the Spinners during their 1970s golden run. He later worked with George Clinton’s Funkadelic, and died the way some of the greats do: onstage, mid-performance, in 1984.

He rests at Detroit Memorial Park — one of two Spinners we’ve now found across Detroit’s historic cemeteries, and a giant of the city’s soul tradition. On our list.
