Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg’s Grave

Our Take

For decades her voice was Detroit’s company on the air. Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg was a pioneering radio personality who ruled the city’s airwaves — a Black woman broadcaster who broke barriers, went on the air to help calm the city during the 1967 unrest, and later became a minister who mixed gospel, soul, and straight talk into something all her own.

She rests at Elmwood, still the Queen. On our list.
