Levi Stubbs’ Grave

Some voices you’d know anywhere; Levi Stubbs had one of them. As the lead of the Four Tops, he sang “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Bernadette” with a desperate, full-throttle urgency that made him one of Motown’s most distinctive frontmen — and, unusually, he never chased a solo career, staying loyal to the same four men for more than four decades.

A generation of kids know his voice without knowing his name: Stubbs also voiced Audrey II, the man-eating plant, in the 1986 film Little Shop of Horrors. He rests at Woodlawn, a short distance from other Motown legends — including his Four Tops bandmate Obie Benson. On our list.
