John Conyers Jr.’s Grave

For more than half a century, Detroit’s voice in Congress was John Conyers Jr. First elected in 1965, he became one of the longest-serving members in House history, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the man who introduced — year after year, until it finally passed — the bill that made Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a national holiday. Rosa Parks worked in his Detroit office for decades; their stories are stitched together.

His long career ended under a cloud in 2017, and an honest account holds that alongside the landmark legislation. He rests in the mausoleum at Detroit Memorial Park. On our list.
