
He was a Detroiter whose most famous product wasn’t allowed to be made in Detroit. Hiram Walker founded his distillery across the river in Ontario — the town of Walkerville grew up around it — and there produced Canadian Club, one of the most famous whiskies in the world. He lived and prospered in Detroit even as his barrels aged on the far bank.
