Fred “Sonic” Smith’s Grave

Our Take

Before Detroit gave the world techno, it gave the world the MC5 — and Fred “Sonic” Smith was the band’s incendiary guitarist, one half of a twin-guitar attack that made “Kick Out the Jams” a founding document of punk. He later married the poet and rocker Patti Smith and largely stepped back from the spotlight before his death in 1994.

He rests at Elmwood, a quieter berth for a genuinely loud legacy. On our list for anyone who traces Detroit’s other musical bloodline — the loud one.
