Florence Ballard’s Grave

The Supreme the story too often forgets rests here. Florence Ballard founded the group that became the Supremes — it was even her idea to name them — and sang alongside Diana Ross and Mary Wilson through the run of hits that made Motown a global sound. Pushed out of the group in 1967, she endured hard, painful years, and died far too young in 1976, at just 32. Her funeral drew thousands to Detroit.

She’s buried at Detroit Memorial Park, and her grave has become a place of pilgrimage for fans who feel she was owed more than she got — from the group, and from history. One of the most poignant stops on the Motown map. On our list.
