The Dodge Brothers Mausoleum

Our Take

Before there was a Dodge car, there were two inseparable, hard-living, mechanically brilliant brothers — John and Horace Dodge — who machined parts for Ford, took stock instead of cash, and turned it into one of Detroit’s great fortunes. They died within months of each other in 1920, and the monument they left behind is one of Woodlawn’s most striking: a temple-like Egyptian Revival mausoleum flanked by a pair of sculpted lions, equal parts grief and grandeur.

It’s the kind of stop that rewards a slow look — the craftsmanship, the ambition, the sheer Detroit of it. Find it on the grounds of Woodlawn, and give the lions a nod. On our list.
