Detroit City Distillery

Our Take

Eight friends who grew up as self-described farm boys in Bath, Michigan set out to make spirits the long way — grain to glass — and planted themselves in the middle of Eastern Market to do it. That location is the whole thesis: Detroit City Distillery sits steps from the farmers it buys from, turning local wheat, corn, and rye into small-batch whiskey, gin, and vodka. The tasting room leans into the neighborhood’s weekend energy, pouring signature cocktails or, if you’d rather hand over the wheel, an “Omakase” round where the bartender reads the room and builds to taste.

What lands it on our list is the sense of place — this is a distillery that could really only exist where it does, in a market district that’s been feeding Detroit for over a century. Come for a flight and a cocktail, leave with a bottle whose label is honestly nice enough to keep. It’s a natural pairing with a Saturday market run, which is exactly how we’d play it.
