David Ruffin’s Grave

Our Take

That aching, gospel-scorched lead on the Temptations’ “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”? That’s David Ruffin — all sharp cheekbones, black-framed glasses, and a voice that could break your heart on the way to the chorus. His story ran the full arc of soul stardom, triumph and turmoil alike, and it ended too soon in 1991.

His Detroit send-off was its own piece of history: MC Hammer paid for the funeral, and the city’s music family turned out in force. Ruffin rests at Woodlawn among the Motown greats he helped define. On our list.
