College of Education Building (Wayne State)

Our Take

The College of Education Building is where Yamasaki started rehearsing. Completed in 1960 as his second building on the Wayne State campus, its defining gesture is the colonnade — a rhythm of slender columns and tall, narrow windows whose shadows redraw the facade all day long, a graphic that never sits still. Those skinny windows weren’t a whim: they line the perimeter faculty offices while the classrooms within go entirely windowless, and the tall-narrow-opening idea he tested here would climb all the way up One Woodward and, eventually, the World Trade Center. There’s also something quietly perfect about the program — generations of future teachers trained inside a building that was itself an architect’s lesson in light and proportion.

It faces the McGregor Memorial Conference Center across the mall — his first campus building and still the masterpiece — with the University Auditorium a short stroll away. All four of his campus buildings went up between 1957 and 1964 within a few minutes’ walk of one another — together they make the tightest Yamasaki walking tour in America, and this is the stop most people walk past without knowing.
