Billy Henderson’s Grave

Our Take

The Spinners were metro Detroit before they were superstars. Billy Henderson helped found the group here, and they cut their earliest sides for Motown-affiliated labels before a run of 1970s classics — “I’ll Be Around,” “The Rubberband Man” — made them one of soul’s greatest vocal groups. Henderson’s tenor was part of that unmistakable blend for decades.

He rests at Woodlawn, another thread in the city’s Motown-era tapestry. On our list.
